Congratulations to all the competitors who made the 4th Annual Hoover-Schrum Spelling Bee such an exciting event.  Out of about 300 students who began the competition in November, the field was narrowed down to the top 17 spellers for the finals.  The finals were held on January 16 at Hoover School in front of an audience of parents, students, teachers, and administrators.

The group of highly talented spellers matched each other word for word for 20 rounds before a champion could be decided.  The contest came down to 2 spellers, Janelle Stapleton and A'Mari Laktzian, both 7th grade students at Schrum.  Janelle finally won by correctly spelling the word "derelict."  This is Janelle's second time as the spelling champion of our district, winning the first time as a 5th grade student in 2012.

Janelle will next represent District 157 at the South Cook ISC Spelling Bee on February 11 at Nathan Hale School in Crestwood, IL.  These spelling bees are part of the Scripps National Spelling Bee where students vie for the opportunity to represent the Suburban Cook County Region at the National Bee in Washington, D.C.  It is further sponsored with financial support from Commonwealth Edison.  Best wishes to Janelle as she advances to the next level.
